“But let’s cut subsidies to NGOs, so we can balance the budget!”
Such suggestions, some more courageous than others, have been heard in the press in recent months. Of course, NGOs understand the need for solidarity and cost-cutting. On the other hand, there is very little truth – and a great deal of bias – in simplistic and emotional calls for austerity.
Last week, Maarja-Liisa Kapaun, an advocacy specialist at the NENO, wrote about how much – or rather how little – could be saved in the national budget by cutting back on civil society subsidies, based on newly published data on the MTÜraha portal.
However, NGO funding is also reflected in a story about cuts in support for Peaasi NGO, for example, and in the opinion of the Estonian Museum Association in the context of its own sector.
