The National Democratic Institute, a US-based nonprofit that supports democratic development at the international level, is giving its annual democracy award to President Toomas Hendrik Ilves.

The Estonian president – among 21 activists, entrepreneurs and officials receiving the award – is being recognized for promoting e-governance and digital civil society.

"llves is a global thought leader on democracy in the digital age. Under his leadership, Estonia, also known as 'E-stonia,' has continued to be a pioneer in using technology to make government service delivery more effective and citizen-friendly," the organization's website writes.

Ilves will speak at the organization's 30th anniversary dinner in Washington on December 10. The event will be attended by hundreds of senior government officials, democracy and human rights leaders.
